Transforming Lives in Oyuma Village, Kenya: How Take Heart Africa is Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

One transformative visit to Oyuma Village in Migori County, Kenya, changed everything. Our founder, Delta, saw firsthand how even a small act of support could unlock hope for children and widows facing immense challenges. Inspired by this experience, she founded Take Heart Africa to empower orphaned children and widows in rural Kenya and break the cycle of poverty.

With Giving Tuesday around the corner, we’re excited to share the progress we’re making in Migori County, where limited access to education and opportunity have kept many in generational poverty. Over the coming weeks, we’ll highlight three inspiring stories from our work in Kenya. Together, we can help more families build a better future. Here’s how:

Breaking Cyclical Poverty in Migori County

At Take Heart Africa, we’re addressing poverty’s root causes by providing educational opportunities for children and empowering widows toward economic independence.

Primary Students (K-9th Grade)

How do we help the 500,000 children under 13 in Migori County get an education when so many families can’t afford even basic needs, let alone school fees?

Our Answer: By providing full sponsorships that cover tuition, uniforms, and meals, we give these young students the chance to focus on their education, rather than child labor. Each sponsorship ensures children can attend school, stay nourished, and build a foundation for a brighter future.

Middle & High School Students (Grades 10 – 12)

How do we keep teens, especially girls, in school when the cost of education keeps rising and barriers like early pregnancy, child marriage, and limited job prospects threaten their future?

Our Answer: We offer full scholarships, mentoring, and support workshops to create a safe, nurturing environment where students can complete their education. Through this support, students can overcome these barriers, graduate, and pursue opportunities to break the cycle of poverty.

College Students & University Scholars

How do we ensure that Migori’s talented students pursue higher education when less than 20% can access vocational training or college degrees due to financial constraints?

Our Answer: With scholarships that cover tuition, housing, books, and meals, we’re helping students stay on course to complete their degrees, find meaningful work, and create pathways to success that uplift their families and communities.

Widows

How do we help widows in Migori County overcome financial hardships and cultural limitations to become financially independent?

Our Answer: By offering entrepreneurship training, micro-loans, and access to markets, we empower widows to start and grow businesses. These opportunities not only help widows support their children but also pave the way for financial stability that can uplift future generations.
